Leaves of Absence
Sick and Bereavement Leave
Certified and classified employees shall be granted sick leave according to the terms of the current collective bargaining agreement. Classified employees not covered by a collective bargaining agreement shall be granted sick leave benefits in accordance with § 2-18-618, MCA. For classified staff not covered by a collective bargaining agreement, “sick leave” shall be defined as in the current classified negotiated agreement. Nothing in this policy guarantees approval of the granting of such leave in any instance. Each request will be judged by the District in accordance with this policy and the governing collective bargaining agreements.
It is understood that seniority shall accumulate while a teacher or employee is utilizing accumulated sick leave credits. Seniority will not accumulate unless an employee is in a paid status. Abuse of sick leave is cause for discipline up to and including termination.
Bereavement leave shall be granted according to the terms of the current collective bargaining agreements, and for classified staff not covered by a collective bargaining agreement, according to the terms of the current classified negotiated agreement.
Personal and Emergency Leave
Certified and classified staff will be granted personal and emergency leave according to the terms of the current collective bargaining agreement. For classified staff not covered by a collective bargaining agreement, personal and emergency leave shall be granted according to the terms of the current classified negotiated agreement.
Civic Duties Leave
Leaves for service on either a jury or in the legislature shall be granted in accordance with state and federal law. A certified staff member hired to replace one serving in the legislature does not acquire tenure.
The District may grant leaves, subject to the recommendation of the Administrator and approval by the Board, to employees for the purpose of attending meetings or conferences that will increase the employee’s knowledge or skills for the job. These leaves may be with or without pay, at the discretion of the Administrator. Travel expenses may be reimbursed at the discretion of the Board, and recommendations from the Administrator.
